About ABSA
To achieve more sustainable buildings, we need to be able to understand, analyse and quantify their environmental impact.
The Association of Building Sustainability Assessors (ABSA) represents building and design professionals who offer specialist skills in assessing the ecological impact of our built environment.
Our assessors use sophisticated programs to analyse buildings' environmental performance. They can offer practical advise on cost-effective ways to improve:
thermal performance
energy and water efficiency
resource and waste management
natural ecosystems and biodiversity
Q: What is Thermal Performance Assessment?
A:
A Thermal Performance Assessment (also commonly known as a NatHERS Rating) is an assessment of how well your house will be able to be
kept thermally comfortable for its occupants throughout the year. A Thermal
Performance Assessment will be required for BASIX if you choose the Simulation
pathway of the Thermal Comfort section of BASIX.
Q: Why does Council require a Thermal Performance
Assessment to be carried out on my house design?
A: Across Australia the Building Code of Australia (BCA) requires all building types to achieve specified energy efficiency levels to meet Australia's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In NSW BASIX meets the BCA requirements for Class 1, 2 and 4 in-part residential buildings.
The Regulations, in relation to Building Envelope performance, have been developed to promote a reduction in the amount of energy required to heat and cool residential developments, leading to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. For BASIX you will be required to get a "PASS" under the Thermal Comfort section.
Q: Do I need a Thermal Performance Assessment for an Alteration and Addition?
A: Yes, Alterations and Additions after October 2006 require a BASIX certificate. We use the on-line BASIX software is used for this purpose.
